Terry's today began its last week of production in York with the future of its factory site still shrouded in uncertainty.

A hotel and conference facilities are among possible uses for the Bishopthorpe Road complex, according to a draft development brief drawn up by York council bosses.

The document says that with potential links with the nearby racecourse, the opportunity exists for a facility of regional significance. But the site could also be used as a base for Science City businesses or as the headquarters for a major organisation.

The draft brief is due to go out to public consultation after being discussed by the planning committee on Thursday evening - only a day before the factory is due to close down.

Production of famous confectionery such as Chocolate Orange and All Gold is moving to factories on the Continent, with the loss of more than 300 York jobs.

Look out for Friday's Evening Press (30/09/05, which will contain a special supplement marking the end of more than 200 years of Terry's confectionery production in York, featuring pictures of workers past and present.
