I WRITE in response to the evening Press's the Bin It! campaign.
I have spoken to several people in York who will be receiving the new green bins. They are not all necessarily in favour of the new system, but are willing to try to change their habits to adapt to it.
To fit waste into the recycling box and the grey bin, it is possible to crush cans, cardboard boxes, plastic bottles etc.
Much of the rubbish binned seems to be food waste. With a little planning, it is easy to make sure all food is eaten before it goes off. I cannot afford to throw food away, so it can even be an economical benefit.
Part of the problem is the consumer culture where we are given everything. It encourages wastefulness.
Residents should give the scheme a go because something has to be done about the ridiculous amount of waste in this country.
