I TOO was very pleased to read letters from Messrs Atkinson and Roe about a Bomber Command memorial, and particularly agree with Mrs Speed regarding the Dresden raid.
I recently spent a holiday visiting Second World War sites including the Dams raid, Sagan prisoner of war camp and Dresden.
I was privileged to meet a remarkable gentleman aged 82 who was in our party. He took part in the Dresden raid. He was a Halifax bomb-aimer who flew with 10 Squadron from RAF Melbourne.
He told us that during the briefing, they were shown photos showing a concentration of German troops in the city, plus an armaments factory situated there. It was no doubt a military target.
When you visit the war graves and see so many young aircrew (most aged between 19 and 21) who died for their country, you realise their bravery has not been acknowledged.
We all thought the elderly gentleman was generous in his attitude when he told us he was not bitter, but deeply disappointed at the criticism of the Dresden raid.
Mr J Larkman,
