THE "Council Plan 2005-06" tells us that the amount needed to deal with the backlog of outstanding and urgent repairs to the building stock for which the council is responsible stands at over £16 million.
At the same time, the council is prepared to spend £1 million over the next three years on recruiting new staff, as your paper reported recently.
Does this mean that we are to see a vast increase in the number of council-employed bricklayers, plasterers, roofers, plumbers, electricians and their attendant supervisors, who will be set to work on bringing our buildings up to scratch to suitably impress the Olympic selectors?
Or are these new recruits intended to replace those who, for one reason or another, are resigning?
