HOW far can York RUFC go in the Intermediate Cup?

There are few teams the Clifton Parkers will fear in the third round following their 60-7 drubbing of North Shields.

Barring a clumsy opening ten minutes in which Shields scored their only points of the game, thanks to an Ian Swanbank try, York destroyed their Tyneside opponents.

York were aggressive and disruptive when Shields had the ball and they played with freedom and passion when in possession themselves, befuddling their opposite numbers with quick interchanges and angled running.

That they were 7-0 down after seven minutes gave them the shock they needed. Their response was a blitz on the Shields line that yielded four tries in eleven minutes.

Scrum half Graeme Smith levelled matters with a clever sniping run from a few yards out on 15 minutes.

Two minutes later, full-back Mike Westwood finished a cracking move with Nick Ventress and Fijian Billy Cankatabula prominent.

Prop Ady Martin was next on the score sheet. Winger Rob Kama looked sure to score but flipped a pass to Martin on the Shields line as he was tackled.

On 26 minutes, it was 24-7 to York when Cankatabula took a low pick-up and finished off a passing move involving fly-half Carl Paterson and Ventress.

There was no let-up in the second period as York had scored six tries.

Ventress took a ball in stride from James Rossington and made light work of the Shields defence.

On 53 minutes, Cankatabula notched up his second score.Three minutes later substitute Ian Davies scored and on 62 minutes Sam Arkle capped a superb piece of flowing rugby involving Paterson, Kiwi Cory Wallace and Cankatabula to make it 50-7.

Wallace bulldozed over for a try with seven minutes remaining and Rossington capped powerful performance with his own five-point contribution.
