A TRAFFIC management scheme which residents hope will improve safety and security down a York street has been given the go-ahead.
The scheme, which will change the parking layout and narrow the entrance to Grosvenor Terrace, was approved by council chiefs following concerns about vehicle crime and speeding down the one-way road.
Clifton ward councillor Ken King said: "Residents were really worried about the car crime and dangerous driving that was going on down this residential street, so the local ward committee agreed to fund an investigation into how this could be discouraged.
"What we have now is a common sense scheme, which makes simple changes to the way parking bays are arranged, and narrows the entrance to the road so drivers are encouraged to take more care.
"We want to make it clear that this is a residential street not just a through road, and considerate driving is required."
Police statistics show Grosvenor Terrace has a much higher vehicle crime rate compared to its surrounding roads .
It is hoped that by altering the way the cars are parked casual vandalism by people wandering through the street will be discouraged.
Parking the cars on the better lit side of the street should also reduce thefts from vehicles.
Police have given their backing to the scheme, and a consultation on the proposals has received strong support from residents.
