Acomb'S ex-City of York goalkeeper Steve Church answered his new side's prayers to ensure it was honours even in Yorks Hockey League division one.
City of York III had the early chances, but it was home side Acomb who edged in front thanks to a fantastic finish by Nick Linfoot.
Soon after, Ian Roberton doubled the lead with a fine solo effort for a 2-0 half-time advantage.
City of York applied fierce pressure and created numerous chances only to find Church making several crucial saves.
At last he was beaten by Tom Sorby midway through the second half. Seconds later, Church made a magnificent save from a David Rowlands short corner, deflecting his shot over the bar.
Matt Todd finally grabbed a point for the visitors with the last touch of the game after a scramble.
For Acomb, Dave Richardson, Paul Kellett, David Bell and Peter Hilton starred in defence, and Chris Foster excelled in midfield. Todd was a constant threat for City of York, whose Pete Perryman was tireless in midfield.
Acomb men's 2nds succumbed 8-1 to Rotherham 5ths with Charlton netting the Tangerines' consolation.
Acomb ladies had a double header against Sheffield Hallam - both sides gaining points.
Acomb 1sts started strong from the start and were challenging the home goal within minutes. They were rewarded when Kerry Rafton slotted home from open play.
Ten minutes later, a spectacular shot from an acute angle fizzed home from Rafton.
Shortly after the re-start Sheffield pulled a goal back, but the Tangerines showed steel and re-grouped well and went further ahead through a Kerry Woods strike.
Acomb's player of the match, Wendy Watson worked constantly in midfield - especially towards the end when injury forced the visitors to ten players.
Acomb 2nds secured their first points of the season with a 1-1 draw against Sheffield Hallam 5ths at Oaklands.
All the action was in the last quarter when the visitors snatched a scrappy goal but the Tangerines sealed a point from a Lorraine Burlinson penalty corner.
