TWO people died and at least nine more were injured in a day of mayhem on North Yorkshire roads.

Emergency services attended a string of accidents including a fatal motorcycle crash at Eggborough, near Selby, and a car crash near Northallerton in which a woman died.

In York, the driver of a Honda car was taken to hospital with suspected neck injuries after it crashed and rolled down a bank near the Hopgrove roundabout.

Three more were injured in a collision between two cars at the Crockey Hill accident black spot on the A19.

Police said they suspected the wet weather may have played a role in some of the accidents.

In the Eggborough incident, a motorcyclist died when he collided with an HGV as he turned on to the A645 from Kellington Lane at about 5pm.

The 18-year-old from the Pontefract area was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic Constable Chris Redin said officers were investigating if the poor weather played a part in the crash.

He said: "This is another tragic loss of life involving a young man riding his motorbike on the roads of North Yorkshire."

Officers closed the busy road for about four hours. Any witnesses should phone 0845 606 0247 and ask for PC Grant Gibson.

A 45-year-old woman from the Hartlepool area died when the white MG sports car she was travelling in was involved in a crash with a blue Ford Mondeo on the A684 between Northallerton and Osmotherly at about 2.45pm. Three other people were hurt, one seriously, and taken to hospital. Witnesses to that crash are asked to call police on 01723 509555.

Meanwhile, three cars were involved in a smash on the eastbound carriageway of the A64 in York at about 6pm.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue spokeswoman said a Honda rolled down an embankment near the Hopgrove roundabout.

The driver was given first- aid by two people from another car involved in the crash. They were not injured.

The spokeswoman said the Honda driver had an injured right shoulder, whiplash, and a possible neck injury and was taken to hospital.

A man from a third car, a Volvo, suffered a chest injury and minor whiplash, but declined hospital treatment.

On the A19 at Crockey Hill, near York, a Lexus containing four people and a Fiat Punto containing three collided at about 6.25pm.

Three people suffered minor injuries, two of whom were taken to York Hospital.
