NATIONAL success came a calling for a Malton and Norton Golf Club pair on a course often graced by the world's best players, writes Peter Martini.
Former club captain Eddie Ruddock and his son-in-law, Andy Shipley, won the Golf Classic competition at The Belfry, on the Brabazon course used for the Ryder Cup.
A total of 1,280 pairs from all over the UK and Ireland had started out in the competition, with 20 pairs reaching the Grand Final at the world famous course by topping their respective regional qualifiers.
Ruddock, 56, a Malton and Norton member for 33 years, and 36-year-old Shipley, who has been at the club for 20 years, then saw off their Grand Final foes thanks to a total of 42 stableford points over the 18 holes, two ahead of their nearest rivals, coincidentally a father-and-son duo from Kent.
