New Earswick All Blacks ARL earned a plum Yorkshire Cup quarter-final home tie against cup holders Drighlington by beating Upton 16-8.

Both sides had a player sent off and Super League referee Steve Pressley will be reporting Upton to the competition organisers because they had too many players on the field during a flare-up near the end.

For the first 25 minutes, the All Blacks had to defend, but they were well led by props Jamie Daniel and Wes Rodgers.

All Blacks took the lead on 25 minutes when scrum-half Liam Gargan spotted a gap and went through for a try, which James Sanderson converted. Sanderson increased the lead to 10-0 with penalties after 30 and 34 minutes.

Upton got a try after 48 minutes but All Blacks responded after 62 minutes when a superb pass by Gargan sent Chris Judge over for a try converted by Sanderson.

On 66 minutes Upton had a player dismissed for abusing the referee but, down to 12 men, they got a try four minutes later.

Two minutes from the end, All Blacks player Mark Boitoit was sent off for his involvement in a flare-up, but after he had dealt with that incident the referee did a head-count and found that Upton had too many players on the field and that two of their men had allegedly come on during the fracas.

Man of the match for All Blacks was fullback Steve Perks, followed by winger Chris Spain.

Despite a spirited performance Heworth 'A' went down 20-12 at Castleford Panthers 'A' in muddy conditions in their Yorkshire League division three game - but they are still in the top five of the table.

Heworth suffered an early blow when losing Carl Potter after less than a minute with a knee injury.

The hosts scored an early penalty goal before Gary Watkinson levelled with a good kick.

Cas then forged ahead with two unconverted tries before Heworth retaliated when Lee Clarke crashed over for a try and with another penalty goal from Watkinson they trailed 10-8 at the break.

The Panthers added an early converted try after the interval, only for Heworth to score a superb unconverted try through Marcus Allan who cut the home defence to shreds to score wide out. Panthers had the last say, however, with a late try.

For Heworth there were good efforts from Watkinson, Allan, Jon Jewitt, Mark Claridge and Rob Ainsworth.

Heworth's first team were without a fixture in the National Conference division two.

York Groves remain in third place in Pennine League division five after going down 18-24 to league leaders Wetherby Bulldogs.

In division four, Selby Warriors saw off Sheffield Hillsborough 38-12, while York Acorn 'A' suffered a fifth defeat of their division three campaign after losing 34-26 at Dearne Valley Dogs.
