ST MARY'S Primary School beat the odds to claim the Peter Feasby Celebration Hockey Trophy.
The small Askham Richard school saw off 27 other primary schools from around the city to win the second annual tournament, taking the title off Robert Wilkinson Primary.
St Mary's avenged a group stage defeat to Rufforth to win the final on a golden goal, Conor McCleary being the hero with the extra-time winner.
The tournament was thought up by Lisa Feasby, the widow of former Robert Wilkinson Primary School head and keen hockey player Peter, who died suddenly in June 2004 aged 48.
Along with other coaches from City of York Hockey Club, Lisa led sessions in schools and this has helped to see the number of participants rise from 18 schools last year to 28 this.
St Mary's made it through to finals day by winning all four of their qualifying matches at Huntington School's Astro-turf pitch, scoring 14 goals and conceding none in the process.
The finals were also played at Huntington, and there they bounced back from a 2-1 defeat to Rufforth to beat Wigginton and Elvington and score enough goals to reach the final where they met Rufforth again in a game which ended 1-1 in normal time.
The trophy was presented at the school by Patrick Scott, City of York Council's director of education, culture and social services.
