CITY of York I's luck changed when they shaded a seven-goal Men's North Hockey League premier division thriller against visiting Alderley Edge I.
Dominant from the start, the hosts went ahead with an open-play goal by Ben Foster on his return after injury.
When Edge retaliated City's defence looked vulnerable and desperate tackling led to short corners being awarded.
From the first one, an initial shot was saved by Ashley Watson but the second strike on the rebound hit Luke Ramli on its way to goal and Edge converted the penalty.
City were down to ten men for a spell but went back into the lead when a quick free-hit by newcomer Roderigo Garcia led to a Simon Grey goal.
The visitors equalised again through a short corner, but City regained the lead when Garcia won the ball and fed Foster to score his second.
For the first 20 minutes of the second half City were well on top. A good goal by Christian Gregg gave City a comfortable margin but when Grey was injured City began to lose their shape.
Edge were presented with several potential chances, but mustered just a lone reply from a short corner.
City of York II narrowly lost 3-2 at Stockton I in NHL Division 2 East.

City did not panic and, with five minutes to go, an Alex Cockram cross was put away by Graham Cook.
Just when it seemed York were back, a replica of Stockton's first goal put the home team 3-1 ahead.
City of York restructured their midfield and so closed down Stockton that the home team were unable to even get one shot on goal.
From one of their periods of pressure Paul Sangwin displayed exceptional stick skills in returning a rebound to Nick Carter to score.
City of York III lost 2-1 at home to Huddersfield I. A mix-up at the back allowed the visitors to go ahead before half-time and after the break City never got to the game's pace.
A yellow card for Tom Sorby was disputed and then turned promptly into a red for dissent.
Ironically, this turned out to be a blessing as the hard-working City team now swung into gear and equalised through Peter Perryman.
With Matt Cattle and Gavin Ward working tirelessly in midfield City pushed hard for the winner but it was Huddersfield who achieved it.
City IV and VI had their games cancelled through frozen pitches and City VIII were unable to fulfil their fixture with Wakefield VII.
City of York V beat visiting Harrogate IV 4-2, Greg Sykes opening the scoring after an advantage was played after Ben Foster was brought down.
Harrogate equalised but Foster put City back in the lead after the half-time with a tap-in.
Harrogate levelled again and pressed hard, but Matt Bonkerin made two good saves. City went ahead with a goal from Phil Hamilton and Sykes added his second.
City of York VII beat Scarborough II 5-3. Clive Mills-Hicks opened City's account and two goals by Nick Kay kept them in the hunt. Neil Reader then bagged two goals, one a screamer into the roof of the net.
City of York IX beat visitors Brigg IV 2-1 in a scrappy contest.
In the first half, the highlight of was a goal by Will Ellis who was the first to react after a shot from a melee rebounded from Brigg's 'keeper.
