Heworth ARLC went on a late rampage against Egremont to make it three home wins from three and lift themselves back out of the re-election zone.
The withdrawal from the National Conference League of Featherstone Lions, with their results expunged, had worked against the Villagers as they thus lost two points which put them behind Egremont at the bottom of the division two table.
But they grabbed them back with a seven-try 40-12 win at Elmpark Way, led by stand-off Aaron Wood, who weighed in with 20 points.
Still, much of the game was closer than that scoreline suggests as it was only in the final quarter that they ended the hopes of the Cumbrian visitors - and scored enough points to lift themselves one place in the table, above Egremont on points-scored.
Centre Dave Hartley had put the visitors ahead on ten minutes and a Darren Block penalty put them 6-4 up at the interval, Heworth having scored a try through winger Mike Welsh after Wood and centre Sam Clarke had combined.
But Wood turned things round as he stepped through and converted his own try then got a second converted touchdown on the hour mark to put his side firmly in the driving seat.
Winger John Coulson soon powered through to extend that lead and, although John Young burrowed over for an away try which Block goaled, Heworth - so often the side to fall away late on in games this season - added further late scores through Clarke, full-back Chris Smith and, following fine play by young scrum-half Lee Rientoul, fit-again hooker Liam Cochrane, with Wood taking his goal tally to six.
Stanley test for Villagers
HEWORTH have been given a tricky tie in the preliminary round of the Powergen Challenge Cup, at home to Stanley Rangers.
The National Conference division two club will be favourites to progress at home but Stanley are a good Yorkshire League club, and indeed tried in vain to gain admittance to the Conference for this season, when Heworth were re-elected.
Powergen Challenge Cup preliminary round draw: Seaton Rangers v Waterhead, Clayton v Leeds Metropolitan University, Illingworth v Gloucestershire Warriors, Heworth v Stanley Rangers, Egremont Rangers v Ovenden, Castleford Panthers v St Mary's University College, Millom v Widnes St Maries, Barrow Island v Huddersfield Sharks, Drighlington v Kells, Stanningley v Halton Simms Cross, Bank Quay Bulls v Elland, Crosfields v Queens, Bransholme v Royal Scots Steelers, Normanton Knights v Embassy, Upton v Blackbrook, Saddleworth Rangers v Sharlston Rovers. Ties to be played on January 7-8.
