AS we are at the time of year where drivers don't seem to know which lights they are supposed to be using in different weather conditions, here is a brief reminder.
1 Sunny days: no requirement to have lights on
2 Dawn, dusk, dull, raining or mist: dipped beam headlights, not sidelights or fog lights. For those of you who use side lights or no lights just because you can see out doesn't mean other road users can see you
3 Fog (visibility less than 100m - Highway Code): dipped beam headlights and rear fog lights (unless someone is following you then it is courteous to turn them off so not to dazzle them and it also means if you brake they will see it)
4 Dense fog (visibility less than 25m): dipped headlights and front fog lights to allow the driver to see immediately in front and the edge of the road (believe it or not that's what they are designed for) and rear fog lights (unless again someone is following you then it is courteous to turn them off).
I hope this is of use to drivers out there including some driving instructors - I have seen some of them using inappropriate lights for the conditions, which could be partially the reason why so many drivers are not using the correct lights.
