THE archbishop's throne at York Minster has been occupied by many great characters down the centuries. But we can be certain that none of them was quite like Dr John Sentamu.
It is not only his position as Britain's first black archbishop which made his enthronement today so special. It is his outgoing and outspoken approach, which is already winning him many friends in his new home city.
That was typified by the ceremony today. Not for Dr Sentamu formal processions in contemplative silence. His arrival by boat along the River Ouse was being heralded by African drums, before he greeted well-wishers gathered at the Minster.
Whether it is an enthronement fuelled by M&S sandwiches, or his refreshingly frank views on social division and modern Englishness, the flamboyant new Archbishop of York always makes an impression. It is an exciting time to play host to the Primate of England.
