A drinker who "glassed" another man in an unprovoked pub attack over a girl has been jailed for 16 months.

David Hall, prosecuting, said Trevor William Barker, 36, attacked 25-year-old David McHugh in Reflex, York, on March 14.

He smashed his glass into Mr McHugh's face, scratching his eye and cutting his face.

The violence left Mr McHugh afraid of being attacked in such a way again and fearing that he would be permanently scarred.

Barker was angry because the unknown girl had got involved in a fracas. But she was not with Mr McHugh, though she had been talking to him earlier in the evening.

"People are entitled to go about their lawful business without witnessing violence in a pub," said Judge Geoffrey Marson QC at York Crown Court.

He jailed Barker for 16 months. Barker, of Evelyn Crescent, Clifton, York, pleaded guilty to wounding. He has previous convictions for violence.

His barrister, Chris Smith, said his client came from a troubled background and had a problem with anger management.

But he could work hard and had proved in the past that he could stay out of trouble.
