THE first indication we received regarding redevelopment of the Discus bungalows site was in June. They told us staying put was not an option.
Can you possibly imagine the worry this instantly caused to the tenants in their 80s and older, especially the ones living alone? It was very wrong to treat elderly people in this cavalier way, and it is still wrong what they are proposing to do.
At the recent meeting council officials indicated they may sell one of the sites and transfer tenants from one site to another through demolition and rebuild. Therein lies the hidden agenda: they want the land.
If they were looking after the interest of the elderly, they could refurbish on a rolling programme with very little disruption to the tenants, but we are told it would cost £28,000 per bungalow. Everyone I speak to disputes this.
They have built up a scenario of everything and anything that could possibly need doing, and then made the figures to fit.
I would say to Mr Waddington we may be getting on a bit, but we are not being fooled.
Can we expect some backing from the city councillors as we have had very little to date, if any?
If this goes ahead, some of these elderly, frail and disabled people will not be here by 2008-2010 through stress and worry.
