Mrs Henderson Presents is a fun, as well as a funny film. But I predict that it could become an American classic too - if there is any fairness in this world.
The film has great resonance for York. Not only because Judi Dench never fails to provide an excellent performance.
But in this film, the combination of Bob Hoskins and Ms Dench is masterly.
So too was the photography. The images of Mrs Henderson on the lake in the twilight was Turneresque. I speak as the person who introduced the burlesque entertainment to Southern Command when I was doing National Service.
The images of the London Blitz had resonance for me since I happened to be crouching in a cellar one street away from the bomb that damaged the wonderful St Martin-le-Grand Church at the entrance to the City Screen.
The nudity is in good artistic taste. One rarely sees such models - even in art "life classes". Anyone who thinks this is obscene has not walked around York on a Friday night.
