York men's indoor bowls team went through to the next round of the Egham Trophy competiton when they scraped home 88-79 against Ryedale, writes Ian Clough.
Trailing on aggregate for much of the game they were boosted by a good performance from the rink of Gordon Smith, who is pictured above playing a bowl. They scored a decisive seven on the 19th end before wrapping up a 30-14 win.
Mark Clarke's team put up a brave fight but perished 27-13 to Nigel Scott's rink.
In the matches at Ryedale, Paul Mooring's team had a good second half to their game, going from 11-9 ahead to finish 26-19.
David Stroughair's four lost the last three ends to go from 19-13 to draw 19-19, but York did enough to play Metrodome on January 8.
The Yetton Trophy derby clash between York and New Earswick proved to be a one-sided affair as York won easily 103-57.
For York, Melanie Brooke's rink were 5-0 down to Lys Jerrum's team after only three ends, but then won nine of the following 12 ends to finish 32-12 winners.
Carol Instone also had a good run winning eight out of 11 ends to lead 18-4 against Shirley Hopwood's team on the way to a 26-15 away success.
At Thanet Road, Linda Harrison's team countered from 8-6 down to topple Margaret Moss's line-up 30-12.
The lone New Earswick success was that of Gill Clark, whose rink fended off a late comeback from Helen Walker's side to win 18-15.
York now meet Scarborough in the third round on January 5.
Earswick strengthen Hebden Trophy bid
New Earswick men's indoor bowls team mounted a serious challenge for the Hebden Trophy when they beat 2004 finalists Featherstone 78-74 and picked up 12 points.
At home, Barry Harrison's rink came back from 6-2 down to lead 29-9 with four ends to play and won 34-15, while Jim Bone's 19-15 win was far more emphatic than the scoreline suggests.
Bob Howland's away team scored four shots on the last two ends in their 24-10 defeat and Dave Sykes picked up a single on the last end in their 20-15 loss.
York continued their fine start to the season by beating South Leeds 119-50 to gain 16 points.
Dennis Haw's home rink recovered from 6-5 down after five ends to win 47-12, while Alwyn Johnson's team won 29-11.
At Leeds, Eric Hodgson's rink lost only four ends in their 27-6 victory.
North Eastern League champions New Earswick had an impressive 92-51 victory over North Cave.
At home, Margaret Moss sealed a fine 34-7 victory with a six on the last end.
At Cave, Diane Hardy's team were 7-0 down after three ends before winning seven ends en route to a 20-15 win.
York's ladies gained their first win of the season when they beat South Leeds 86-73, winning both home rinks.
Margaret Smith's team won 30-14 after a fine start, a feat repeated in Joyce Gee's 21-13 success.
At Leeds, Kath Pepper's team lost 25-21 after leading 18-17 with seven ends to play. Pat Bracken's team lost 21-14 after yielding 16 shots between the sixth and 13th ends.
