YORK City reserves enjoyed a comfortable 5-0 victory over Teesside Athletic in the first round of the North Riding Cup at KitKat Crescent last night.

Bryan Stewart (2), Lev Yalcin, Alex Rhodes and Ashley Winn were on the scoresheet and vice-captain Nathan Peat began his comeback in the match from a broken leg injury.

Peat completed 70 minutes before being substituted as a precaution and reserve boss Colin Walker said: "It was a good performance and we won comfortably after we overcame the fact that it was their cup final and they were very enthusiastic in the early stages.

"Stewart scored a couple of good goals - one was a header - and Ashley Winn scored from outside the box."

City play Scarborough at home in the semi-final on a date yet to be arranged.

The Seadogs cruised through by thrashing a young Middlesbrough XI 5-1.

Mark Quayle smashed in the opening goal, Mark Eccles topped that in the second half with a cracking long-range effort for his second of the game. A Michael Coulson cross was deflected in for an own goal before Quayle completed the scoring for the home side by converting a Ged Dalton pass. Middlesbrough's consolation effort came in the dying seconds.

Former City defender Tony Barras has hung up his boots at the age of 34 after failing to recover from a hip injury.

The centre-half played nearly 200 games for York in a five-year period at Bootham Crescent which saw him collect the Clubman of the Year accolade in 1996/97 before he moved on to Walsall for £20,000 after a loan spell at Reading.

Billingham-born Barras, who scored in City's famous 3-0 League Cup win over Manchester United at Old Trafford spent the 2003/04 season with Notts County. He has been at Macclesfield since summer 2004.
