A STABBING victim managed to stagger to a friend's house after being wounded "several times".
The man, who has not been named, was today in a stable condition in York Hospital, following an incident in Penley's Grove Street, York, at 2.20am yesterday.
The injured man fled to a nearby house where residents called the emergency services, as reported in later editions of the Evening Press yesterday.
One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: "I was woken up by screams and looked out of the window to see one man lying in the street.
"There was another man standing over him and I thought they'd been in a fight or something, but then the ambulance arrived."
Other neighbours said they had not been disturbed by any noise in the night and were shocked to see police officers guarding the property.
Forensic teams also searched the area and officers scoured nearby gardens.
One man said: "No one heard anything. The first I knew about it was when the police arrived making house-to-house calls."
A woman said: "We heard talking in the street and saw police vans, but we didn't know what it was all about."
Detective Sergeant Steve Taylor, of York CID, said: "We've had a good response from the public.
"We've got sufficient witnesses to have sufficient understanding about what happened."
He urged anyone else with information to phone detectives on 0845 6060247.
A man was due to appear before York magistrates today charged with attempted murder.
