YORK RI consolidated their leadership of Yorkshire Three with a 21-8 victory at Old Modernians.

Despite the miserable conditions and playing up the slope in the first half, RI attempted to play open rugby, scrum half Tim Nash taking every opportunity to test the home defence.

Breaks by Michael Tyrpenou, Justin Hardman and John Alexander failed short of the line and when RI did cross the line they were hauled back for a forward pass.

The home side took the lead on the half hour against the run of play, scrum-half Simms kicking a penalty when RI were offside.

RI levelled just before the break with a Tyrpenou penalty.

From the restart RI pressurised the home line, Anthony Allport and Garrett Mallon driving deep into Modernians territory. From one of these drives RI extended their lead.

A tap penalty on the halfway line allowed Mallon to break the first line of defence and sprint clear, when he was eventually collared short of the line Tyrpenou was on hand to receive the final scoring pass. His conversion gave RI a 13-3 lead.

Old Modernians reduced the arrears on the hour when a defensive mistake allowed right wing Casey in at the corner.

When the home side were penalised for killing the ball Tyrpenou added the points. It was now all RI and Hardman crashed over in the dying minutes.
