READING your otherwise clear summary of the Arc Light saga (December 30) we were slightly concerned people could misread it as though the BNP's unwelcome intervention had been on the same side as the residents' association.
In fact, the last thing residents wanted was these racist bigots sticking their oar in. Leading campaigner and residents' association chair David Nicholson added his support to our Unite Against Fascism counter-leaflet, as did Councillor King, the Vicar of Clifton, the Rev David Caswell, and former Sheriff of York Les Marsh, as well as other Clifton residents. Whatever people's views on Arc Light, no one wants these far-right thugs wading in trying to exploit local issues for their own repugnant ends.
Members of Unite Against Fascism, with support from the regional TUC, are holding another rally outside Leeds Crown Court at 9am on Monday, January 16, where BNP leader Nick Griffin is up on charges of incitement to racial hatred. Anyone wanting help with transport from York should phone me, via York UNISON, on 01904 553490.
