A YOUNG rider is seeking international glory with the backing of a Government scholarship.

The challenge facing Fiona Maynard, from Clifton, York, is all the greater because she is visually-impaired, which has a major impact on her ability to compete in her chosen event of dressage.

But now Fiona, 19, has secured £3,000 from the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) to support her quest to reach the top.

The Government-funded programme helps the most talented 16 to 25-year-olds with potential to reach world-class levels to balance academic life, training and competing.

TASS ambassador, Sir Steve Redgrave, said: "I know how difficult it is to develop in your sport to the highest levels while undertaking academic studies or a career. This exciting new scheme provides our most promising future Olympians with top quality sporting services and access to good quality training facilities."

Fiona, who trains with Sue Joy and Lynne Varley at Haxby, said: "I couldn't believe it. My hard work is starting to pay off. We are at a massive regional disadvantage because most events are in the south, so the sponsorship is fantastic as it pays for travel, accommodation and stabling costs."

The cash will also fund training, physiotherapy and advice on time management, nutrition and fitness.

She hopes to compete in the Para Dressage World Championships in 2007, and the London Paralympics in 2012.

This year she wants to appear at events such as the Junior and Young Riders International Competition in Somerset, and the Spanish Paralympic Championship in Madrid.

She represented Great Britain at both events in 2005, while also securing a first and second rosette in her class in the Paralympic Winter qualifier in November 2005.

Fiona has no central vision. She can only distinguish limited detail, and is unable to see the arena markers.

"The hardest thing is in the warm-up at competitions. People seem to appear out of nowhere, which is very disconcerting," she said. "My trainer and I work with a headset, and she tells me if someone is approaching."

Fiona, who has been riding competitively for six years, is taking a degree in equine business management at Bishop Burton College, near Beverley.

She has her own horse, Carry On Cruising, whose stable name is Monty. She is looking for a permanent sponsor and a new dressage horse to help take her to the top.
