MY wife and I set off for York from our home in East Cleveland, a round trip of about 120 miles. The primary purpose of our visit was to circumnavigate the full length of the city's Roman wall.
There was a slight wind over the moors on our journey but arriving in York at about 10.30am the weather was calm and extremely mild. Imagine our surprise when we arrived at one of the gates to find a notice telling us that the walls were closed because of adverse weather conditions.
I then approached the Tourist Information Centre to register our dismay. The lady did her best to tell us that this situation was normal.
Understandably, I didn't agree and she kindly found me someone in the city council to discuss the problem over the phone.
This gentleman explained there had been some frost early on in the day that presented a hazard to the public and that the council had to beware of litigation if someone got injured.
I could understand that. But that ice wasn't there all day and some attempt should be made to review the situation and get those gates open for the very important tourists who bring a great deal of finance to this great city.
