I READ the article on the temporary ice rink with interest, and concur in general with the positive sentiments expressed.

I would go further, to suggest that the city council could go some way to providing a permanent facility of this nature, and the former Ikon and Diva nightclubs building comes to mind for conversion to a permanent all-year indoor facility.

It would go some way to alleviating the perceived boredom of at least some of those youngsters who appear to enjoy intimidating their elders and regard it as fun to damage property.

A feasibility study could be the first step along this route. Should the outcome be negative, other more suitable sites should be considered, rather than simply dropping the matter.

If there are any criticisms of the temporary facility, it would be that for the size of the rink, and the service provided, the cost of admission was too high, as were the prices in the cafeteria.

For the cost of admission in an established ice rink, which is in general lower, the sessions are longer, the ice surface is prepared between sessions, and there is a larger ice area. These are all matters which would require consideration for a permanent facility.

If all came to fruition, wouldn't it be worth it if, ten years down the line, the next Torville and Dean came from York or York Blades won the National Ice Hockey League?
