IN reply to the letter Safety First Policy Drives Me Up The Wall (January 14), I felt I must tell you about the experience I and two friends had on the city walls a few years ago.

It was a cold February morning, but we decided to go swimming at the Barbican baths. We caught a bus into York, made our way down Fossgate and Walmgate and there joined the city walls at Walmgate Bar. However, we had not walked very far before we came across patches of black ice which made walking extremely dangerous. I thought that it would be so easy to slide right off the wall, injure myself and then wait in the cold for the emergency services to come and rescue me.

Because of this frightening, personal experience, I would say to those whose responsibility it is to keep the city walls safe: please do put safety first and if there is any hint of danger, whatsoever, then please keep the walls closed.

Mrs Dorothy Best,

Steeple Close,

Wigginton,

York.
