FOLLOWING the public meeting on January 16, I was surprised to learn that incineration is by no means the cheapest option for disposing of waste.

It seems City of York Council is supporting it simply because it is seen as the easy option.

It seems to think that it is easier to collect rubbish and chuck it into an incinerator, than increase rates of recycling. This is another example of the complete lack of ambition and leadership shown by York's Lib Dem councillors.

In deciding that incineration is the easy option, perhaps councillors have forgotten to consider public opposition to the proposals. Their sham consultation would certainly point to that.

Not only did they neglect to post it through people's letterboxes - but they even forgot to include a box to tick saying, "No, I don't want an incinerator".

Judging from the public meeting, there are at least some people in York who are determined to make incineration a very difficult option for the council.

I suggest that if readers of the Evening Press feel that they haven't been adequately consulted, the first step is to complain to Councillor Waller.
