I READ with interest your article on mother and baby parking at Asda (January 12) and felt for the lady in question (Gillian Bell, of Huntington, York).
I have had to struggle, in Tesco's car park, with twin granddaughters and a toddler in the past years, and have been frustrated seeing someone without children parking in these areas which have more room to facilitate getting children safely in and out of cars.
A couple of years ago I wrote to all the large supermarkets in the area and suggested that they sit round a table together and decide on a date and then for all of them to say, on that date, that they will be clamping offenders who park where they shouldn't.
Then, why not, fine these people and donate the money to a charity?
I felt sure that if enough advertising was done in store, as to when it would happen, then people would have to adhere to the rules.
I received replies from all of the stores saying they would lose customers, but I wrote again saying if they all decided to do it on the same day there would be nowhere else for these customers to go. I received replies which were negative in the extreme and I finally gave up.
But surely these giants in the retail trade should be looking at keeping all their customers happy and if they overcame their fear of meeting other store representatives and agreed together on a plan of campaign then the customers could only accept the inevitable. Perhaps they will read this letter and think again.
