TONY Blair keeps insisting that he believes climate change is the most serious issue to face the world's governments.

Yet policy decision after policy decision at home confirms the suspicion that this is still so much hot air.

This Government has just presided over huge increases in rail and bus fares, with apparently more to come.

Private railway companies are incapable of investing in the new rolling stock we need because their recently-awarded franchises include no provision for this and the Government is planning to spend less rather than more money on trains - laughable if it wasn't so tragic.

After eight years in office Labour has still failed to tackle the appalling Tory legacy. It's time to get real about shifting people out of their cars and on to public transport.

Re-nationalise the trains and re-regulate the buses, Mr Blair, and invest as if you really believe that global warming is the biggest threat we currently face.

Oh, and please don't say you can't find the money. This Labour Government is currently planning to spend £25 billion on replacing the Trident nuclear weapons system - Britain's own weapons of mass destruction. As with the war on Iraq, somehow the money can be found for that.
