I TOTALLY agree with Arthur Sutherland regarding a permanent ice-skating rink in York (Letters, January 17).
When I was a teenager I visited Bradford rink twice, and really enjoyed it. Lack of funds for travelling prevented me from visiting the rink regularly, and I would only travel all that way as a teenager if friends would come with me for safety reasons.
Had there been a rink in York I would have been there so much I would have earned myself a reserved boot locker and maybe been the next Ms Torville.
But now, at the tender age of thirty-something, I think that remains just a childhood dream.
I'm sure in the darkest corners of the city council's piggy bank there are some pennies to get the ball rolling, along with sponsorship deals, and possibly money from the lottery fund.
Put York on the ice-skating map and, who knows, the championships could be held here.
The old Ikon and Diva site, as suggested by Mr Sutherland, sounds feasible, as would somewhere in the Monks Cross vicinity.
We have sports centres in and around York, we have football, rugby, swimming, bowls, cricket, table tennis, even snooker tournaments at the Barbican, but we don't have ice-skating.
