I WAS really pleased to see that someone else is concerned with happiness, and has had the nous to put together a book on the subject (The Cook's Book, January 20). I shall certainly buy a copy as I have more than a passing interest in the subject.
I enjoy watching a bit of telly when I'm not rushing around doing things, and caught some of Making Slough Happy on BBC2 a few weeks ago and I've been thinking about it since.
The programme makers tried an experiment with the residents of Slough, and recruited a large panel of volunteers to see if they could become happier. Their happiness levels were measured beforehand, and then they were encouraged and helped to make some simple changes in their lives.
Predictably, they got happier, as did their family members, and with many, the changes became the new, happier norm. I believe the experiment was so successful the local council became involved to promote and continue the project, and started to include measurements of happiness levels in its own quality of life indicators.
Although York is no Slough, I wonder if there would be any interest in a Making York Happy. Perhaps Mr Aggarwal would meet with me and we could juggle some ideas around. I'll see him at the launch of his book Thoughts, Quotes and Poems On Happiness at Borders at 7pm on February 3.
