GOALS were in short supply for York-area sides in the Northern Counties East League on Saturday with Selby Town, Harrogate Railway and Tadcaster Albion all failing to hit the net.

Selby's hit-and-miss season continued as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Garforth Town in the premier division.

It could have been worse for the Robins as the visitors, inspired by the early play of former Selby player Vernal Blair, missed a first half penalty when Brett Renshaw fired a yard past a post after Andrew Cox had fouled Gerald McCargo.

It was a tough derby encounter of few chances and neither side will be satisfied with just a point.

Harrogate Railway's free-scoring forward line hit the buffers at Sutton Town where they also had to settle for a goal-less draw.

Both sides struggled on a bitterly cold afternoon although Martin Haresign's side looked the more likely to break the deadlock.

They did have a goal disallowed when Chris Howarth latched on to a Graham Marchant header and slotted the ball home, only to have the effort disallowed for offside.

Howarth also felt he should have had a penalty when he was held in the Sutton penalty area.

Tadcaster Albion's division one promotion hopes dipped when they suffered a 3-0 home reverse at the hands of Borrowash Victoria.

Albion could have no complaints as Victoria led 2-0 at the interval with Jay Thompson getting both and Paul Galloway added the third in the final minute.

It was left to premier division promotion chasers Pickering Town to spare the region's scoring blushes when they came behind against bottom club Brodsworth Welfare to win 2-1.

The Pikes were facing one of the shocks of their campaign when they trailed to a goal by home defender Gareth North, but two strikes by former York City man Lee Nogan turned the game round for Alex Mathie's men, who moved above Railway into fourth spot.

Goole let a point slip away in the last-minute as they lost their UniBond League division one encounter at Warrington Town 2-1.

The Vikings dominated the game early on but Warrington took the lead against the run of play when David Shaw converted Steve Latham's pass.

Goole kept plugging away and were rewarded in the 70th minute when ex-City loanee Rob Constable netted from the penalty spot after a foul by the Warrington 'keeper.

Just as though it looked as though Goole had done enough to secure a point substitute Graeme Mitchell headed a late winner to give Warrington their first win in 11 games.

Goole entertain Glasshoughton in the West Riding County Cup quarter-final tie tomorrow, while Selby are also in home cup action, taking on Sheffield in the Presidents' Cup.
