OF course we need a new central library (January 23). The council's scrutiny review of the library service (available on its website) says a new central library is a priority for a service with out-of-date buildings, services and stock.
Building the library would demonstrate and celebrate the unique role that libraries play. Libraries provide access to information and materials, expertise in support of learning, discovery and communication, and a public venue for everyday occasions for informal and formal interaction.
They are also a symbol of the public realm as a shared "public good".
York is a tourist destination for its rich heritage. Like Norwich, Peckham or Bournemouth, we can also have an outstanding modern building equipped for the 21st century.
It should embrace the old and the new, and by design, appeal to all sections of the community. Such a facility will attract residents and visitors to share in its varied services, and bring an economic and social buzz to the Hungate area.
The Press should start a campaign for it now!
