FIVE girls from York Acorn ARLC have been selected to play for their respective Yorkshire county teams - just a few months after they started out.
Acorn have run girls teams at under-15s and under-14s only this season, but they have already seen Katey Langan picked for the Yorkshire under-16s squad, while Becky Blackburn, Rebecca Seaman, Claire Hebblethwaite and Lou Deakin have all made it to the U14s.
Both squads are 20-strong, and face three fixtures starting in March, with old foes Lancashire among the opposition.
Delighted coach Gill Blackburn said: "There were 80-odd girls from all over Yorkshire at the trials and the standard was really high, so to get this many players selected in the squads of 20 is brilliant."
The girls train on Monday and Friday nights at the Acorn ground from 6-7pm and any newcomers would be welcome.
Acorn's ladies team, made up primarily of players from outside the area, has now folded after a tempestuous season, but will be reforming and joining the development league of the women's game thus giving anyone with no experience a chance to have a go.
The club will be holding a taster day in the near future for anyone wanting to try the game out at a training session.
