Mr T Scaife rightly questions council tax extortion and suggests a hike in VAT as a solution (Letters, March 17). This isn't necessary.
Were the present rate of VAT applied to magazines and newspapers as it is in Europe, council tax could perhaps be abolished.
I wouldn't object to an extra few pence on the Press, not a tax of compulsion, but of choice. I commend the idea to the house, but will lay seven to four that you won't publish this and lay the bee in my bonnet to rest.
