A TEENAGER was killed and two others seriously injured when two motorbikes crashed into each other near Selby.

The victims have not yet been named, but the rider killed was identified by police as a 19-year-old local man. An injured motorcyclist and a pillion passenger, both male, are in a serious condition in York Hospital.

The crash occurred at about 7.40pm on Saturday in Brackenhill Lane, between Doncaster Road and Leeds Road near Brayton. Two motorcycles, a red Honda and a red and blue Chituma, collided.

A spokeswoman for Tees, East and North Yorkshire Ambulance Service said one of the injured victims was a 17-year-old, who suffered multiple fractures.

There are no confirmed details available yet on the other injured rider, but police said he too was in his late teens. The road was closed for nearly six hours, while the emergency services attended and examined the scene.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue service believed the collision had been head-on.

He said firefighters had provided general assistance and helped provide light at the scene.

Inspector Mike Harris of North Yorkshire Police said: "An accident occurred in Brackenhill Lane, Selby. Two red motorcycles were involved.

"As a result of the accident, a 19-year-old rider from the Selby area died at the scene. Two other males were seriously injured and are being treated at York Hospital."

The road was closed until about 1.30am on Sunday morning.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the accident, or either vehicle shortly prior to the collision.

Saturday's accident was the seventh fatality on the roads of Selby district in six months.

On Christmas Day, 17-year-old Neil Houliston died when his car was in a head-on collision near Brayton.

Sam Foster, 21, died when the Renault Clio he was in hit a tree on December 12.

Three days earlier, Richard Allan Orr, 25 died when his Vauxhall van hit an electricity pole in Gateforth, and three days before that Alexander William Mackay, 20, died when his Ford Granada hit a tree in Sherburn Road.

A motorcyclist and a motorist were also killed in accidents in October, at Eggborough and Sherburn.
