AMPLEFORTH College student Ben Ainscough plans to follow in the rugby union studmarks of some illustrious international old boys.

The 18-year-old has been selected for the Scottish Schools team to play against Ireland Youth in Dublin this weekend, having already featured against Scotland 'A', France Schools and the North of England.

He played at hooker in the 29-5 defeat at the hands of France Schools at Edinburgh last Sunday when the Scottish side also included Harrogate's Harry Duthie at full-back.

The college has produced several full internationals over the years, notably former England skipper Lawrence Dallaglio and the Tadcaster-based Easterby brothers, Simon and Guy, who have both played for Ireland.

Ampleforth's future is in good hands as the college's director of rugby is John Liley, the former Leicester Tigers and England star.

Geoff Thurman, Ampleforth's head of games said: "Ben is hoping for selection for the Home Nations tournament. We've had other boys selected, but this is our first Scottish Schools cap.

"Ben captains the first XV and plays for Scottish Exiles. He had trials with them, and was then selected for the Scotland team."

Originally from Berwick-on-Tweed, Ainscough has been at Ampleforth since he was eight when he attended the college's prep school at Gilling.
