ONE-TIME York City and Aston Villa defender Lee Grant hit the headlines in the Mail on Sunday National Club Classic competition.
The central defender, whose last known stop on his football career was to have trials with Conference strugglers Southport, was playing for York GC when he beat Fulford's Matthew Kelly, one of York's leading amateur golfers, seven and five.
However, Grant's efforts came to nought as Fulford won 3-2 in a tie switched to Fulford after York's Strensall course was closed following heavy rain.
The Fulford victors were Steve Dunn, Matthew Stephenson, who opened with a sizzling two-under-par start of 3, 3 and 3, and David Rose.
