I READ with interest Rory Mulvihill's letter. I fully agree with every word he says. He has spoken out on behalf of non-believers everywhere.
Surely you would suppose that no rational person would believe the tales which he criticises to be literal truth?
Many Christians also do not accept such fundamentalist interpretations of the Gospels. They also accept, but do not condemn, my own agnosticism.
The danger comes when fundamentalist beliefs in any religion come to be seen as the only truth. Then we are in trouble!
In Iran we have Armadinejan, a fundamentalist Islamist who believes in the total obliteration of another state. In the USA, Bush, a fundamentalist Christian in charge of the world's biggest nuclear arsenal, who appears to be considering unleashing an attack on Iran (possibly nuclear).
In the UK, we have Blair, a fundamentalist Christian who followed Bush into an illegal and unnecessary war in Iraq, causing the deaths of British troops and who knows how many innocent Iraqis.
This belief in fairy tales is harmless when it remains in the private domain.
But when it informs a particular world political view, as it seems to now, there danger lies, especially when you "lubricate" it with oil.
So come on, all you non-believers, stand up and be counted and say your piece!
