"WICKED" was how one little girl described the thundering 21-gun Royal Salute in York as the city celebrated Her Majesty The Queen's 80th birthday.
Gunners from 40 Regiment Royal Artillery fired the four 105mm light guns at noon yesterday from Museum Gardens as hundreds of people watched.
The Kings Division Waterloo Band then performed the National Anthem, leading spectators to remove their hats as a mark of respect.
Mandy Walker, from York, who was with her son, Joe, said: "It is nice to see so many people. The band is very good. Joe didn't like the guns. They made him cry."
Richard Caine, from Nottingham, said: "York is such an old town and it is good to still have all the tradition."
His daughter, Zara, seven, said: "It was wicked."
