TWO people were rescued from a burning house by firefighters in York after their toaster caught light.
A man and woman, both in their 20s, were trapped on the first floor of a house in Hanover Street East, Clifton, when the fire broke out in their kitchen at about 11am yesterday.
A fire service spokesman said the fire was believed to have been caused by a toaster.
She said: "We gave them survival advice over the telephone until the arrival of the brigade."
She said the couple were unable to escape, so were advised to close the door and stop smoke from getting through by blocking it with a duvet.
Firefighters used ladders to rescue them through a window, before battling to put out the blaze.
The couple were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation by paramedics at the scene.
They were both given oxygen but did not need to be taken to hospital.
