REIGNING champions Clifton Alliance had a comfortable victory in the Hunters York and District Senior League President's Trophy Challenge when they defeated Hunters Premier League Cup holders Woodhouse Grange by seven wickets at Clifton Alliance.
With Dunnington having failed to qualify after a five-year winning run, a new name on the trophy was in the offing when the game started at Clifton with Woodhouse taking first innings in the season's opener.
Clifton's new Australian all-rounder Paul Boraston soon met with success when he bowled Andrew Anderson for two then Woodhouse suffered a major setback with the dismissal of acting skipper Nick Hadfield for nine when he was smartly stumped by Simon Corley off the bowling of James Postill.
The Clifton bowler then quickly took two more wickets as he grabbed 3-14 in a seven over stint and, with a further Aussie success, Woodhouse were rocking at 30-5. Spinner Alex Renton (2-16) compounded the agony as Grange slumped to an embarrassing 72-9 before the experienced Peter Grewer added some measure of respectability with an unbeaten 32 to lift the Grange score to 99 all out in just 28.2 overs.
Clifton skipper Richard Musgrave was then a first over casualty when he was bowled for a duck by J Hughes who repeated the process to dismiss Matt Taylor for eight. John Gilham 26 and John Hunter 20no settled the reply down then Boraston took control to rattle an unbeaten 39 as Clifton coasted to victory in 23.3 overs.
The trophy presented by League president Jeff Carlton.
Woodhouse Grange 99 (P. Grewer 32no, P M Boraston 2-18, J Postill 3-14, A Renton 2-16) lost to Clifton Alliance 100-3 (J Gilham 26, J Hunter 20no, P M Boraston 39no, J Hughes 2-13)
