IN RESPONSE to the letter from Mr. Duckworth (Roundabout Snag, April 20), I am pleased to inform him that proposals to increase the capacity of the Hopgrove roundabout are included within City of York Council's 2006/07 capital programme as a partnership scheme with the Highways Agency.
Because the larger roundabout is under the control of the Highways Agency, it is taking the lead on promoting a scheme to reduce delays at this location.
The comprehensive upgrade of the whole junction will also involve alterations to the smaller roundabout and other approach roads and, therefore, it is proposed that the city council will make a contribution to the costs using funds from the Local Transport Plan allocation.
The technical appraisal of possible options is taking place, but it is likely that signalisation of the roundabouts and the widening of the approaches will be included in the preferred solution.
It is anticipated that these improvements will reduce east bound delays on the A1237 outer ring road and allow traffic to flow more freely on to the A64 (east and west).
Increasing the capacity should reduce the amount of traffic which diverts away from the junction along minor roads and through adjacent residential areas.
If the technical and funding issues can be resolved in the near future it is anticipated that work could begin later this year.
Coun Ann Reid,
Executive Member for Planning and Transport,
York.
