I would like to add my own view to that raised in your Comment column on April 24.
This referred to the "low-key affair" of St George's Day and its general lack of celebration when compared with St Patrick's Day, for example.
Our family have been long-time supporters of the parade in York, having had two children taking part with either their Scout troop or Scout band, and I have always been proud at the way in which the day has been celebrated by the Scouts, Guides etc.
I was away on business this year, but read the coverage and comment in The Press.
Imagine my confusion when I discovered that the parade had been led by a pipe band! This was St George's Day.
I have nothing against the City of York Pipe Band, whom I've listened to many times, but what have the bagpipes, kilts and all other items of Scottish ceremonial attire got to do with St George's Day? Is it any wonder the celebrations seem low-key when we can't even bang our own drum? Can we expect to see the Brighouse and Rastrick Band leading the St Patrick's Day parade in Dublin next year?
