YORK Cricket Club bounced back from their disappointed Saturday defeat with a comprehensive Yorkshire League victory over Castleford at Clifton Park on Monday.
The batting, which had misfired badly at Hull 48 hours earlier, was in the groove on home soil on May Day, amassing 307-7 in their allotted 55 overs which proved way beyond the visitors.
York, surprisingly put in to bat, made a solid start with openers Stephen Piercy and Dan Broadbent putting in 34 for the first wicket.
Australian Dan Wilson, batting at three, top scored with 91 which included 14 fours and a six and was well supported by Duncan Snell before both fell to Castleford's Selby-based young bowler Alex Romaniw.
But the York innings was given extra impetus by skipper Marcus Wood who made an undefeated 59 off 58 balls to push York beyond the 300 mark.
Romaniw, who also featured in the York and District Senior League side for Castleford last season, finished with 4-78 and former York bowler Greg How weighed in with 3-96.
Nick Thornicroft quickly had the Savile Park outfit on the back foot by grabbing a couple of early wickets as he reaped the benefit of pitching the ball up.
Opener James Sykes (41) and John Randerson (54) staged a Castleford recovery with a stand of 91 before both fell to right-arm off-spinner Wilson. Randerson's effort included ten boundaries.
After they went Castleford's innings ebbed away to 168 all out as Thornicroft returned to wipe out the tail and finish with 5-25 to ease York to a 139-run win.
