'TAKING Pride in the City'... how can we when residents eager to recycle and keep their neighbourhoods clean are constantly undermined or let down by our own city council?
On my last visit to the new recycling centre on James Street, I was told by site staff to throw my daughter's books in the landfill skip because the book recycling bin was full. Unwilling to do this, I took the books to the recycling facility on Bishopthorpe Road, but this, too, was overflowing. I took the books back home and will now take them to local charity shops directly.
On top of this I have visited the can recycling bank on Bishopthorpe Road three times in the past month, only to find the site in an absolutely disgusting state. The can bank has been constantly full and there is broken glass and litter everywhere. Though she was keen to help, I asked my daughter to stand back while I trampled over broken glass to empty our bags.
I am doing my best to educate my daughter, the city's next generation, to "Take Pride", but the whole experience is frankly degrading and dangerous. If we can't rely on our city council to get these basic things right then I despair.
