A GROUP of residents have got together to launch York's first support group for the charity ChildLine.

The York Friends of ChildLine is planning to stage its first event at 7.30pm tomorrow night at York Health Services Social Club in Whitecross Road.

Chairwoman Nadine Paver said there would be a talk about the charity, which provides a 24-hour helpline for children and young people, and an opportunity to meet the group and staff.

"When an article appeared in the press highlighting ChildLine's need for funds, I was stunned to hear that the service might not be able to continue," she said.

"A group of friends and I decided we wanted to help - we felt strongly that we could raise money and help ensure that every child that needs help has the opportunity to speak to someone, whenever they feel the need.

"We are incredibly proud to be launching York's first Friends of ChildLine group.

"If you are interested in helping us to raise vital funds, or in hearing about ChildLine's work, give ChildLine a call on 0870 336 2940 and come along to our first meeting."

Sandra Harding, regional fundraiser for ChildLine, said: 'We are delighted to finally have ChildLine representatives in York. Each day, ChildLine is overwhelmed by the cries for help received from lonely and frightened children. As many as 650 children call ChildLine Yorkshire & North East every day, but many more don't get through due to the huge demand for our service.

"It's a great relief to know when children see the ChildLine logo around York they will know that we are continuing to work hard on their behalf."
