WHY do people think we would be much worse off with a president?
Don't they realise an elected head of state allows us to become a more modern and egalitarian society?
After all, in a republic, Parliament would belong to the people since it would be "our" government, not "Her Majesty's".
What is more, the executive would be genuinely accountable to the House of Commons, thereby giving increased legitimacy to the whole process of government.
Not only is the monarchy costly, but it holds back steadily developing open government.
Abolish it now.
