I SEE from The Press (Derwenthorpe 'damaging for elderly', May 9), that the retired residents of Meadlands are worried about their peace and quiet being lost by traffic passing through if Derwenthorpe is built.

Just to reassure them, there are a goodly number of retired people living in Tranby Avenue, Osbaldwick, where we have a York First No 6 service bus passing through every ten minutes during the day and half-hourly in the evening until ten minutes to midnight; numerous "rat-runners"; people up and down in cars from the nearby driver testing unit taking their driving test or having a little extra tuition; various sizes of vans passing through to service Jacksons' 'corner shop' in Farndale Avenue; heavy lorries and vans which seem to prefer Tranby Avenue to Osbaldwick Link Road to get to and from the nearby industrial estate.

After a time, one becomes used to the traffic noise and it becomes hardly noticeable.

So there is no need for the retired residents of Meadlands to worry about the noise disturbance. They would get used to it - eventually!
